Everyone has a story to tell.

We spend so much of our lives asking people
what they do.

But rarely do we ask the questions that reveal who they really are.

I'm Emilie Jayne, a London-based contemporary artist, and I believe everyone has a story to
tell that could help someone else feel
less alone, more understood, or simply a little more connected.

I'm on a mission to paint them.

I'm fascinated by the experiences, relationships and emotions that shape us.

My work explores themes of identity, love, motherhood, belonging, friendship and resilience.

I don't want my paintings to simply capture what someone looks like.

I want them to capture something about who they are.

Beyond the Canvas

The stories behind the people we see.

My belief that everyone has a story worth hearing extends beyond my paintings.

Through Beyond the Canvas, I sit down with
people to explore the experiences, choices
and lessons that have shaped who they are.

Because when we share our stories, we give
other people the chance to see themselves in them.

A little more about me

I'm London-based, the eldest of seven siblings, and I think growing up in a big family probably explains why I've always been fascinated by people, their personalities and the stories that make them who they are.

I'm happiest when I'm painting with music playing in the background, chasing the sunshine, discovering somewhere new to eat or gathering people I love around a table. I'm a big believer in making the most of the little moments - the conversations that go on for hours, the traditions you create with the people you love, and the memories that somehow become the ones you remember most.

Alongside my art, I work a corporate job, so my life isn't spent entirely in the studio. I'm building my art career around a 9-5 that I also love, finding time to paint, create, exhibit and tell stories wherever I can.

Art has become my way of making sense of people, experiences and the stories we carry with us. It gives me a reason to slow down, look a little closer and ask questions I might otherwise never think to ask.

And ultimately, that's what I hope my paintings do for the people who see them - make them stop for a moment, feel something, and perhaps recognise a little piece of their own story in someone else's.
